A bit about me and my blog

Hi, I’m Gemma! Welcome to my blog, dedicated to solo female travel. Having travelled on my own since 2002, I know how daunting it can be when you're about to set off on your own. I want to inspire women of all ages to choose a trip that suits them perfectly, find the best places to explore, eat and stay, and to ultimately take the leap and start planning that incredible journey!

I started my award-winning blog in 2016 and my podcast in 2018. I’ve since appeared on BBC’s Woman’s Hour as an expert on solo travel, I am on Wanderlust Magazine’s ‘Ask the experts’ panel, and have appeared as a solo travel expert on discussion panels at The Sunday Times Destinations show, and The Royal Geographic Society. My podcast was shortlisted twice last year for the best travel podcasts to listen to in 2019, and Red Magazine recently listed me as one of the top resources for solo travel.

Brands I’ve worked with so far

I create content that’s right for you and right for your brand. I’ve got great SEO skills and can help you promote your destination or product to a highly engaged and loyal audience. So far, I’ve enjoyed working with lovely brands below, leading to some great exposure and more visitors. An example includes Outsite Lisbon, which achieved a number 1 ranking on Google and an increase in bookings :)

I’ve been featured in leading publications such as The Telegraph, Wanderlust Magazine, The BBC, The New York Post and Matador Network. I’ve also popped up in Good Housekeeping speaking about travel trends and my favourite destinations. I'm also a regular contributor to the HostelWorld blog, and have created their comprehensive guide to Central America. I'm also a speaker on podcasting and travel and have previously run a travel tech Q&A on Twitter with Mashable.

— Rebecca Males, Head of Community, Outsite.co

Gemma excels as both a podcaster and a presenter. Her fresh take on adventure went down a treat at Yestival, where she led an extremely popular workshop on podcasting, inspiring countless new podcasts to hit the airwaves. She is, quite simply, awesome.”

How we can work together

Solo female travel blog

I would love to work with you to help promote your brand or service. Please see below for ways that we can work together, or feel free to reach out to me at girlsthattravel@gmail.com

  • Travel writing and content production
I’m a regular contributor to the HostelWorld blog, covering online travel guides, plus shorter articles such as listicles, tips and destination based pieces. I have also written for Matador Network, and contributed to solo travel articles for The Telegraph. I’d love to create some content that is the right fit for your publication.

  • Podcast content covering you or your destination
My podcast was recently shortlisted twice for the best travel podcasts of 2019. So far I have 5,000 downloads from only 14 episodes. I would love to talk to you if you are a traveller who would like to share an experience, such as my interview with BBC’s Race Across the World contestants Natalie and Shameema. or I also record on-the-road special editions from specific destinations. Such as interviewing digital nomads in Lisbon.

  • Press trips and reviews
If your hotel, service or product is a good fit with my brand (solo female travel), I would love to chat to you! For example I have previously reviewed Outsite, a co-living and working space in Lisbon and my blog post achieved a No.1 ranking in Google which has since led to an increase in bookings for Outsite. I also enjoy reviewing products. My recent Bluetooth speaker for POW Mo Audio appears on Page 1 of Google.

  • Speaking
If you’re looking for someone to speak about solo travel I would love to chat! I have previously appeared as a solo travel panelist for Wanderlust Magazine at the Destinations Travel Show 2020 at Kensington Olympia, I was a speaker at Yestival, and even the Women’s Institute! I’ve also appeared on BBC’s Woman’s Hour as an expert on solo travel.
