Living like a local, with Lamorna Ash
Lamorna Ash is a British writer, and her award-winning book ‘Dark, Salt, Clear: Life in a Cornish fishing town’ documents her time spent in the Cornish town of Newlyn. As part of her masters dissertation in Social and Cultural Anthropology, Lamorna integrated herself into the fishing community, spending days at sea with local fishermen. We spoke about what it is to fully immerse yourself into a new environment, and what she took away with her, from her experiences at sea.
With family roots in Cornwall, and indeed, a Cornish name, Lamorna finds herself on a week-long trawler trip with a crew of local fishermen, which gave her a rare glimpse into their world, their warmth and their humour.
Rather than merely being a passenger, Lamorna gets her sea legs, takes her shift and guts fish. She’s a full on member of the crew and learns how to adapt to a community whose welfare has depended on the sea for centuries.
